History

Did Cleopatra live closer in time to the Moon landing than to the building of the Great Pyramid?

The short answer

Yes. The Great Pyramid was built around 2560 BC. Cleopatra died in 30 BC — about 2,500 years later. The Apollo 11 Moon landing was in 1969, roughly 2,000 years after her death. She is nearer to us than to the pyramids by about 500 years.

We file ancient Egypt in a single mental drawer marked long ago, and the drawer is far too small. Egyptian civilisation ran for thousands of years, and Cleopatra sits at the very end of it, not the middle.

Do the arithmetic and it stops being a trick. Great Pyramid to Cleopatra is roughly 2,530 years. Cleopatra to Apollo 11 is roughly 1,999. The gap she was born into is the larger one.

Turn it around for the full effect. When Cleopatra was alive, the Great Pyramid was already an ancient monument — older to her than the Colosseum is to us. She was a tourist at it.
